What Is Panic Disorder?

Panic disorder is a specific type of anxiety disorder formally recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the authoritative guide used by mental health professionals to diagnose psychiatric conditions.

According to DSM-5 criteria, panic disorder is characterized by recurring, unexpected panic attacks—sudden episodes of intense fear that trigger severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause.

These attacks must be followed by at least one month of persistent worry about having additional attacks, concern about the implications or consequences of the attacks, or significant changes in behavior related to the attacks.

According to the National Instiftute of Mental Health, approximately 2.7% of U.S. adults experience panic disorder in a given year, with women being twice as likely as men to be affected. In Georgia alone, an estimated 200,000 adults struggle with panic disorder symptoms.

During a panic attack, individuals typically experience a rapid onset of intense fear accompanied by at least four physical or cognitive symptoms from the DSM-5 list, which includes:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feelings of choking
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Chills
  • Heat sensations
  • Numbness
  • Feelings of unreality
  • Fear of losing control
  • Fear of dying.

Between attacks, people with panic disorder frequently experience anxiety about when and where the next attack will occur, leading to avoidance behaviors that can significantly restrict daily activities.

How Do I Know I Need Treatment For Panic Disorder?

You may need treatment for panic disorder if you experience:

  • Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks
  • Persistent worry about having additional attacks
  • Significant changes in behavior due to the attacks (such as avoiding places where attacks have occurred)
  • Physical symptoms during attacks including racing heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, or fear of dying
  • Difficulty functioning in daily life due to anxiety about potential panic attacks
  • Self-medicating with alcohol or drugs to manage symptoms
  • Developing agoraphobia (fear of places or situations that might cause panic)

If these symptoms interfere with your ability to work, maintain relationships, or enjoy life, seeking professional treatment is recommended.

How We Treat Panic Disorders in Atlanta, Georgia

Our multifaceted approach addresses panic disorder from multiple angles:

Therapy

We offer several evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to your specific needs:

Individual Therapy: One-on-one sessions with a specialized therapist provide personalized attention and a safe space to explore your unique experiences with panic disorder. Your therapist will help you develop individualized coping strategies and work through underlying issues contributing to your anxiety.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This highly effective approach helps identify and change thought patterns that trigger panic symptoms. CBT teaches you to recognize catastrophic thinking and replace it with more realistic assessments, breaking the cycle of panic.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT combines cognitive techniques with mindfulness strategies to help you regulate emotions, tolerate distress, and improve interpersonal effectiveness. These skills are particularly helpful for managing the intense emotions that accompany panic attacks.

Group Therapy: Facilitated by experienced clinicians, our group sessions provide valuable peer support and reduce the isolation often experienced with panic disorder. Learning that others face similar challenges can be tremendously healing and provide opportunities to practice new social skills in a supportive environment.

Holistic Therapies

We believe recovery should incorporate a mind-body approach.

We incorporate holistic therapy approaches including mindfulness meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises to help regulate the nervous system.

Neuropsychiatric Modalities

Our panic disorder treatment center incorporates cutting-edge neuropsychiatric approaches to enhance traditional treatment methods:

Neurofeedback Therapy: Neurofeedback therapy uses real-time displays of brain activity to teach self-regulation of brain function. By monitoring brainwaves through EEG sensors, clients learn to recognize and modify patterns associated with anxiety and panic. Over time, this training helps the brain develop healthier responses to stress triggers, reducing the frequency and intensity of panic attacks.

BioSound Therapy: Biosound therapy combines biofeedback, music therapy, sound frequencies, and guided imagery to promote deep relaxation and stress reduction.

Clients recline in a specialized BioSound chair that transmits low-frequency vibrations synchronized with soothing music and nature sounds. This multi-sensory experience helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, decreasing hyperarousal states associated with panic disorder while promoting feelings of safety and wellbeing.
