What is Personality Disorder Treatment?

Personality disorder treatment is the focused treatment available through several levels of care for those diagnosed with a personality disorder. It involves using different types of therapy that help improve and minimize the symptoms of mental health disorders. Therapists trained to provide care for people with personality disorders work with them via both individual and group therapy modalities. While personality disorders cannot be cured, with the right treatment program, people can learn to anticipate and manage their symptoms. As a result, they experience less anxiety and feel greater control of their lives.

Types of Personality Disorders

Personality disorder treatment can help people who have any of the different types of these mental illnesses. Personality disorders are classified under three different headings, and each type has its own diagnostic criteria. The types of personality disorders are:

Emotional and Impulsive:

Signs and Symptoms of a Personality Disorder

Someone in need of personality disorder treatment will exhibit signs that they have this type of mental illness. While not everyone has the same symptoms, the most common ones include:

  • Distrust of others
  • Tends to hold grudges
  • Misinterprets other people’s comments and actions in negative ways
  • Isolates
  • Quick to anger
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Shows a lack of emotions
  • Paranoia
  • Impulsive behaviors that are often risky
  • Suicidal feelings
  • Hallucinations
  • Exaggeration of achievements or talents
  • Hypersensitive to criticism
  • Depends on others for validation and their own identity
  • Strives for perfectionism
  • Difficulty maintaining healthy friendships or romantic relationships
  • Uses drugs or alcohol to soothe symptoms of mental illness

What Causes a Personality Disorder?

While there isn’t one singular reason a person develops a personality disorder, some factors are thought to contribute to someone having one. Genetics can play a huge role, as it often does when it comes to mental health disorders running in a family. As well, events that take place during childhood can influence a person developing a personality disorder. So much of a person’s personality takes shape as they are growing up, which means certain events can cause a personality disorder to develop. These events can include childhood abuse or neglect, experiencing a traumatic event, and the loss of a parent or other close family member.

Other factors include being raised in a chaotic environment that includes things like family violence, no close supervision from a caretaker, and family members with mental illness or an addiction to drugs or alcohol. While not every child exposed to these challenging circumstances will develop a personality disorder, it increases their risk of having one, as well as other mental health disorders.

Treatment for Personality Disorders

While personality disorders cannot be cured, seeking out professional help can make a huge difference. Personality disorder treatment programs provide people with the ability to receive a full and accurate diagnosis so they know which disorder they have. From there, a menu of effective therapies that help improve their symptoms can be created. As well, a person can use prescription medications to help ease their symptoms.

Treatment for personality disorders can take place in a residential program. This requires the person to temporarily live in a facility that provides round-the-clock care. The other option is to attend outpatient care. This allows the person the freedom to live in their own home while traveling to a facility for therapy appointments. The length of time spent in either level of care depends on the severity of the person’s symptoms and their treatment goals.

Talk therapy can create real opportunities for people with personality disorders to make progress. They can improve some of their symptoms and become better prepared to work, go to school, live independently, and enjoy healthy relationships. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) proves especially helpful as part of an overall treatment plan. Additionally, other types of talk therapy and the use of experiential therapies can provide excellent results.
