How Does Outpatient Treatment for Mental Health Work?

Outpatient treatment for mental health has different levels of care depending on a person’s diagnosis and treatment needs. Outpatient programs provide the flexibility of residing at home or in a supportive living environment. People attend therapy sessions for several hours each day. The length of sessions varies depending on the level of care.

Our outpatient mental health treatment in Atlanta provides comprehensive and personalized treatment plans using evidence-based and holistic therapeutic approaches and medication management services. Participants have access to individual group, family, and couples therapy sessions. They also have access to holistic therapies, such as art therapy, yoga, music therapy, pet therapy, and biosound therapy.

Mental Health Programs We Offer

At Peachtree Wellness Solutions, we offer two different options for outpatient mental health programs. Both programs provide comprehensive treatment and support tailored to each client’s unique needs.

  • PHP (Partial hospitalization program): Our PHP is a full-day program that provides the highly structured and intensive treatment found in our residential programs without overnight stays at our facility. PHPs are ideal as a step down from residential programs or for individuals who do not need round-the-clock support and supervision.

IOP (Intensive outpatient program): Our IOP provides more flexibility than PHPs since sessions are usually half-days, several times weekly. Participants can continue to work, go to school, or take care of other personal commitments and responsibilities. This level of care can be a step down from our residential or PHP. IOPs are also well-suited for individuals with mild to moderate mental health disorders who can manage their condition outside of treatment and who have a strong support system at home.

Types of Mental Health Disorders We Treat

We treat a wide range of mental health disorders through our outpatient programs, including:

  • Dual diagnosis: Dual diagnosis conditions are where an individual has both a substance use and mental health disorder. Outpatient treatment can help by providing specialized therapeutic approaches to treat both addiction and mental health issues simultaneously.
  • Depression: Depression disorders feature persistent feelings of loneliness, sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness. Outpatient treatment often includes individual and group therapy sessions and medication management to help alleviate symptoms.
  • Bipolar disorder: Bipolar disorder involves mood swings between depressive episodes and mania episodes. Outpatient treatment can include medication management, psychoeducation, and therapy sessions to help develop coping skills to manage symptoms effectively.
  • Anxiety: Anxiety often has symptoms of excessive worry, panic, and fear that can impact daily functioning. CBT, holistic therapies, individual and group therapy, and medication management in outpatient treatment can all help individuals learn how to reduce anxiety symptoms and manage their condition effectively.
  • OCD: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder where there are intrusive thoughts (obsessions) followed by repetitive behaviors or rituals (compulsions). Outpatient treatment helps individuals uncover the underlying causes of their obsessions and develop coping strategies to manage compulsions.
  • PTSD & trauma: PTSD and trauma often occur from experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event or being exposed to repeated trauma. Outpatient treatment helps address symptoms, such as flashbacks, hypervigilance, and sleep disturbances, to help people process their trauma in a safe and supportive environment.
  • ADHD: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity, and difficulties concentrating and focusing. Outpatient treatment can help improve concentration and focus while reducing hyperactivity and impulsivity using medication management, behavioral therapies, and psychoeducational.
